What is a Lightning address?

⏱ 4 min read Astra Academy

Traditional Bitcoin addresses are long strings of random letters and numbers, about 34 characters, that look something like this: bc1qxy2kgdygjrsqtzq2n0yrf2493p83kkfjhx0wlh. They are designed for machines, not people. Every time you want to receive Bitcoin, you generate a new one, and sharing it feels clunky compared to just giving someone your email address.

A Lightning address fixes that completely.

What a Lightning address looks like

A Lightning address looks exactly like an email address: satoshi@wallet.com, jeff@astra.com, or yourname@provider.com. It is readable, shareable, and permanent. You can put it on a business card, in an email signature, or post it publicly without any concern about it expiring or needing to be regenerated.

How it works behind the scenes

When someone sends Bitcoin to your Lightning address, their wallet automatically reaches out to the server associated with your address, requests a Lightning invoice, and pays it. All of this happens in the background in one or two seconds. From your perspective, you just received Bitcoin the same way you would receive an email.

You do not need to be online or take any action for someone to send you Bitcoin this way. The server associated with your address handles the request on your behalf.

How to get a Lightning address

Many Bitcoin wallets now offer Lightning addresses as a built-in feature. When you set up a Lightning-compatible wallet, you are often assigned an address automatically. Some examples of wallets that provide Lightning addresses include Strike, Wallet of Satoshi, and Breez.

Some services let you choose a custom name, while others assign one. Either way, the format is always name@provider.com.

What you can do with one

You can share your Lightning address with anyone in the world and receive Bitcoin from them instantly, with no account setup required on their end, no forms, and no waiting. It works across different wallets and providers because Lightning addresses use an open standard.

For anyone who wants to receive Bitcoin tips, get paid for freelance work, or accept small payments from family and friends, a Lightning address is the simplest way to do it.

A Lightning address makes receiving Bitcoin as easy as sharing your email. It is one of the biggest usability improvements in Bitcoin's history.
